Board in Strategy: The 2026 Strategy Brief for Directors

Jun 2026

Strategy is a more pronounced board duty than ever before.

Against the backdrop of systemic economic flux, Boards must now sharpen their strategic posture.

The Singapore Institute of Directors (“SID”) is a leading voice for board excellence in Singapore. It is with this vision of professionalising directors’ roles that inspired the 3-Part Strategy in Board series.

At yesterday’s webinar, Dr. Wilson Chew shared the four key dimensions of the board’s strategic role: Value Unlocking, Value Creation, Value Protection, and Value Acceleration.

What stayed with us were the frameworks, and more importantly, where the 300+ Directors took the conversation. Many of the live discussion focused on the Board’s strategic role in a new global landscape, and especially so in the Asian family-controlled or founder-led company context. Some themes included:
1. How do IDs constructively contribute to strategy, particularly in the Asian boardroom context, where the disposition is inclined towards respect and consensus?
2. How do Directors stand their ground and work with Management on strategic discussions?
3. How do nominating committees refresh tech-literate capability fast enough to match the pace of disruption (e.g. generative AI, humanoid robotics)?

The Strategy at the Board programme continues with a half-day intensive on the board’s role in strategy formulation (with particular emphasis on Value Unlocking), and a full-day Strategy Masterclass spanning all four dimensions, culminating in a boardroom dialogue on strategy with a sitting Chairman.
